A NIGHT OWL REVIEWS BOOK REVIEW | Reviewed by: Arianne
The Sahara Desert, Raven is a little girl whose mother is assumed dead. The only thing Raven has from her mother is a hat that she wears all the time. A freak sand storm grabs the hat from her head and Raven goes running after it. She gets lost in the storm. Unbeknown to her, a Storm God and a god-like animal Cat see her from above and the Cat comes to rescue her. Storm God tells him not to because it is against the rules for Immortals to play with humans. However, it is too late and the cat saves Raven. The Storm God deposits her back near the people she was with at the time. Raven tells the story of how someone saved her but no one believes her. Ten years later, Raven is riding a horse in the mountains and has a feeling something is watching her. She’s had this feeling for years now and has been saved from many accidents by some force. Raven goes to a shelter she has built in the mountains because she needs to take some samples; she studies storms now. Raven goes to sleep one night and is woken up by a bear that tries to kill her. The Cat comes and saves her from it. She decides to call it “Storm Cat.” The next day, instead of getting samples, she decides to go for a bath at a waterfall. Storm God and Raven meet for the first time and they spark in more than one way. There are some mysteries in this story that keep you reading. Questions such as what is Raven? Is she human or something else? What happened to her mother? Lawna Mackie has created a unique tale that will keep you guessing until the end. She has also written characters that are fleshed-out and intelligent. The background is well thought out too. This is an enjoyable story with interesting elements.
