Lies Beneath

This is a delicious supernatural romance that draws on the darker aspects of the mer mythology, where they entrapped lovesick sailors or overturned boats and drowned their dislodged occupants for pleasure. The novel enfolds entirely from the male protagonist's viewpoint, and Calder is a sympathetic predator, with his dark nature redeemed by love. His conflict with his sisters, the complicated relations between family and the willingness to sacrifice for a loved one is also explored in this novel, which makes it well-rounded and more complex than a simple romance. Lies Beneath will definitely appeal to young adult readers that love supernatural romances and prefer more complex characters.

Calder White is a merman, and like his beautiful sisters, a monster. Human beings and their emotions are delicious to merkind, and while his sisters don't resist the pull to drain and drown their prey, Calder is trying to break away from the family. But the pull is irresistible and Calder is summoned back to Lake Superior where his oldest sister offers him a deal: assist in killing John Hancock, the descendant of the mortal who killed their mother, and Calder can win his freedom from his family. Calder accepts the bargain and attempts to execute his plan by seducing John's daughter Lily. But Lily's ability to resist him and her own magical allure soon begins to play havoc with his family's revenge.

Book Blurb for Lies Beneath

Calder White lives in the cold, clear waters of Lake Superior, the only brother in a family of murderous mermaids. To survive, Calder and his sisters prey on humans, killing them to absorb their energy. But this summer the underwater clan targets Jason Hancock out of pure revenge. They blame Hancock for their mother's death and have been waiting a long time for him to return to his family's homestead on the lake. Hancock has a fear of water, so to lure him in, Calder sets out to seduce Hancock's daughter, Lily. Easy enough—especially as Calder has lots of practice using his irresistable good looks and charm on ususpecting girls. Only this time Calder screws everything up: he falls for Lily—just as Lily starts to suspect that there's more to the monsters-in-the-lake legends than she ever imagined. And just as his sisters are losing patience with him.
