This was an incredible story. You get a woman forced to move back home and having to face her small town foes who still get their entertainment from ridiculing her. Her daughter discovers that she shares her mother's ability to "see dead people" and has to choose between her first love and soul mate and the man who would be her future.
As a reader and a mother, I connected with Dani on a number of levels. She did what was best for her daughter (and herself) by moving back in with her dad, even though the thought of having to face all those horrible people she knew in high school was gut-wrenching. And while Dani did wallow in self-pity and the "why me's", she was fiercely protective of her daughter...especially when she discovered Riley could "see dead people" too. She didn't want Riley to suffer like she had, but also connected enough with her daughter to know when she could fight her own battles.
Dani's biggest challenge was in her relationships with Alex and Jason.
Alex, the only friend she had when she lived in Bethany, was integral part of her teenage years. He was her confident, as well as the older man she had a crush on. When she returned to Bethany and saw Alex, all those feelings came flooding back again. But what kind of relationship can a 40 year old woman have with a ghost? As Dani tries to learn more about who Alex was when he was live, she discovers he's been hiding secrets from her and she's not sure if she can get past what she sees as a betrayal.
Jason was a challenge for Dani. He made her nervous and caused her to step outside her comfort zone, but he also understood her on a level no one has before. They both had, as Dani put it, steamer truckloads of issues, but when they were together they connected on such a level that they share things with each other they normally wouldn't do with anyone else. Jason made Dani feel and have hope for a future.
Dani has to learn to love herself and trust that she can be loved for who she is...."sees dead people" and all. This is a great story and well worth the read.
In the small river town of Bethany, Dani Shane never fit in. Being different pushed her to the fringes of society, and even leaving town for two decades didn't stop the talk. Now, with her sixteen year-old daughter Riley in tow, Dani is back in Bethany looking for a fresh start. Too bad her plans for staying under the radar are about to be thrown out the window.
Mischievous and sexy, Dani's old friend Alex still has the power to rock her world, but there's a big obstacle standing in their way--Alex has been dead for forty years. With a ghost popping up at inopportune moments and sparking conversations with her teenage daughter, Dani scrambles to find solid ground and get a grip--both on her sanity and her heart.
