“A Perfect Blood” book 10 in the Hollows series by Kim Harrison lifts the continuing saga of Rachel Marianna Morgan to an exciting whole new level.
The book starts off with a bang and really never looks back. One of the things that makes this series such a fantastic read is its ability to hurl our favorite witch/demon into some pretty drastic situations and seeing her rise to the occasion and kick some serious butt; although her butt kicking antics mostly happen after having her own butt handed to her on a silver platter. Well, something's change and something's stay the same.
When we last visited the Hollows, Rachel had torn a whole in the Everafter, outed herself as a demon, and faked her own death to avoid returning to the Everafter with Al, her demonic mentor. Living the life of a demon has its disadvantages and poor Rachel is learning those painful lesson first hand.
"A Perfect Blood" does an excellent job of paralleling real-world antiquated beliefs and hatreds that human race has imposed on others through history. It offers a glimpse into the harsh realities of the types of prejudices that the Inderlanders experienced during the time of the Turn; the betrayals, insults, lies and hate. It's a stark reality check for our heroine as she is thrust into an inter-governmental power struggle between the FIB and IS. Not to mention a fanatical supremacist group's quest for world genocide of all inderlander.
Interwoven within the chaos that is Rachel’s life is the growing realization that Ivy and Jinks seem to be moving on with their lives; building relationships and new friends, while she by choice is stuck in limbo. Unlike the other books in the series, "A Perfect Blood's main focus is on whom and what Rachel believes herself to be. Is she Witch or Demon? If she is witch, then she is good. If she is Demon, does that make her bad? This entire concept of good or bad has been the bane of Rachel's existence since the revelations of the experiments that Trent's father performed on her to save her life. While the answer to these question is plain to the reader, it so much fun watching Rachel discover her values, her beliefs and her longings. Oh and she does have them even-though they are still too difficult to admit to herself.
Given the drastic measures Rachel has taken to remain hidden from Al, there are moments when it feels as though she has digressed in her level of confidence and stymied her grit in the process. Though false bravado and sheer stubbornness allow her to combat some adversities, there are some instances when she is merely a shell of her former-self. These are the defining moments in the book where choices are made and inner peace is found.
I know everyone is wondering about Trent. I just love Trent. He really makes no excuses of whom and what he is, but there is so much more to him than what he shows on the surface. Some of the things we thought we knew about him are the same, but in A Perfect Blood there are so many new layers to his personality on display; the book really lets him shine as the man we want him to be.
As I mentioned earlier, things are changing at Vampiric Charms; Ivy has a few new friends, Jinks is settling after the death of his wife and there are a number of new players on the scene adding their own brand of excitement. While the gang is all present and accounted for, their presents are less focused on Rachel and more on the Run at hand. Ms. Harrison's depiction of the routine that each performs during a run is smooth and gives a better insight as to how the group works and what can happen when unknown factors are thrown into the mix.
A Perfect Blood is a standout continuation of the life and times of Rachel Marianna Morgan. I just can’t wait for the next installment.
