"Lover in Stone" is the first book in the new series, The Darkest Kynd, by S.C. Dane. It is an enjoyable read and the author writes a captivating story that is hard to put down. Gargoyles are rarely written about in the paranormal books and Ms. Dane has done a wonderful job bring them to life. The storyline flowed well and the characters are well introduced. I am looking forward to reading more in this series as I'm curious to the outcome of all of the characters introduced in this book. The author makes you feel the fear, concern and joy as the main characters head on their quest. The pages fairly sizzle as the two become more drawn to one another.
Merrick has stood as a guard to the arches of Hell, keeping those out that don't belong, for 2000 years. He is soon to lose himself to his beast due to what he is forced to do and because he is unable to be close to his other Kynd kind. The Kynd were sent from Heaven when they wouldn’t pick a side in the Heavenly battles and they were separated from one another. Merrick is requested to guide Angelia, a human, into Hell, to retrieve a stolen book. They soon realize that there are larger forces working, leading them on their quest and drawing them together. With Merrick so close to losing himself they are at a disadvantage, until they realize that Angelia is more than she knows and could possibly lead to his salvation.
To the world they are the Grotesqueshideous chimeras and gargoyles. But before they are locked in their stone prisons, they are Kyndmagnificent beings condemned to prowl the nightmares of every realm. Their tortures will doom them. The love of a Chosen One could save them. Merrick has become a beast. Angelia has been chosen to save him. But will their fragile love survive the Hell the chimera is chained to?
