Grave

Queen of the Dead, #3

“Grave” by Michelle Sagara finishes the trilogy in an enthralling and unsettling saga. The eerie concept of afterlife is creatively depicted even as the difficult topics of grief and mourning are explored through different characters. There are wonderful twists and turns as Emma tries to find a way to defeat the minions and the Queen of the Dead herself. I love the way everyone in Emma’s group finds a way to fight in a particularly characteristic fashion, and each person (corporeal or not) is true to his or her nature.

There is a fascinating completion to the arc that was started in the first book as we are given an unexpected background to the formation of the Queen and her City of the Dead. I tend to be rather squeamish so I was surprised to discover that although I was unsettled by some of the events that take place, it was not to the point where I was reluctant to read the story late into the night. This story is a wonderful exploration of human nature and the challenges of dealing with grief, with an inevitable resolution that is both satisfying and eye-opening. This author is impressive with her ability to create so many vivid and disparate characters even as she reminds us of the essential elements of life and death. There are both heart-wrenching endings and wonderful beginnings that tie up the loose ends of the series in a richly satisfying package. It is inadvisable to read this story without being familiar with the first two (“Silence” and “Touch”), so start from the beginning and get to know all of these compelling characters.

This young adult fantasy story tells the final tale in the trilogy that comprises ‘The Queen of the Dead’ series. Emma and her friends take the fight to the City of the Dead after their families are attacked by the Queen’s knights. The history of a young talented girl named Reyna is unveiled, as are her painful experiences of living with the dead. The dead and the living face impossible challenges but their actions will ultimately shape the future for everyone so they must all figure out how to choose wisely and remember to be true to themselves.

Book Blurb for Grave

Grave is the concluding novel in the gripping Queen of the Dead paranormal trilogy.

Emma and her friends have survived the Necromancers sent to the city to kill them. They've gone to ground in a cottage north of the city, but time is not on their side. There are no barriers that can keep the dead out, and the dead obey their Queen. It's only a matter of time before they're found.

Nathan has been blessed by the Queen of the Dead. She has granted him a physical body. He can eat, he can breathe, he can speak and be heard. The Queen calls this resurrection. Nathan calls it Hell. The living think he's alive. He's not. He's trapped in the citadel that the Queen of the Dead calls home.

Emma wants to free him. To do that she has to survive long enough to reach the City of the Dead, and face its ancient Queen. But the city of the dead is the heart of the Queen's stronghold—and her power. Emma can't do it alone.

She's not alone. But even with hunters and her own dead at her side, what hope does she have against a woman who has lived so long, and grown so powerful, she's almost a god?
