Alia is a fun loving woman with a taste for beauty in all of its forms. Art, music, poetry and the human body top her list. She is a fallen angel who seems to flow gracefully and sensually through 1940's Paris. She is enjoying life and lovers. She sees the light in each person and is drawn to it. It seems that she has a wonderfully free and erotic life, but there is a deep gnawing grief within her that drives her to punish herself and question God. Now the life and parties she embraces are getting dark, bleak and terrifying as the Nazis move in. The people she loves the most are in danger. She has seen some of humanities best people and now she will experience some of the worst.

I was riveted to this intensely dark and gritty story. While there were plenty of steamy and sensual scenes there were also nail biting and gut wrenching parts as well. There have been a handful of books I have read with truly vile antagonists and this is one of them. Kochen is repulsive, intelligent, and creatively evil plus every other despicable adjective there is around. Each time the story seems to settle into a pleasant rhythm Kochen comes back into the picture to up the fear and violence.

Broken is a wonderfully written emotional rollercoaster. It coaxed and sometimes dragged me through a wide range of feelings within a few pages. One minute I was enjoying the passion and desire and the next I wanted to punch Kochen in the face. In between these two extremes were the times that I wanted to cry with Alia and comfort her. These characters are so real that you feel as though you are there with them. You feel you have found a friend along the way...and occasionally a new enemy as well.
