I'd been looking forward to Wulf's story for a while, especially after what I saw of Kathlyn in the previous book -- but I'm not sure Edge of Power delivers.
To be fair, I think it's difficult to live up to expectations when the hero has been an object of interest for the last four books. That said... I thought that the story started out slow. For some reason, there was a lot of background given in the beginning that I didn't feel was necessary. Wulf also had a lot of internal dialog. Not to perpetuate the stereotype of the strong silent hero, but I really did think that he spoke way too much inside his own head compared to how much he verbalized in the previous books. I also thought Kathlyn would have been stronger and more kick-ass based on what I saw of her, but that didn't end up being the case. I get that she's essentially been kept as a pet for her entire life and I have to wonder how she sounds so intelligent when I doubt her father would have let her be educated, but it was still frustrating to see the soft/strong dichotomy. She did end up growing a lot as a character, which made it better, but the frustrating thing was that I thought Biyu was a much more compelling character than her. Which is a bit of a problem, when the supporting characters seem more interesting than the main characters are.
I wasn't sure if Wulf was into her "hidden strength" or the fact that he thought she was "soft from the inside out" and found it attractive, which kind of bothered me. I way preferred the attitude of the previous heroines and their ability to keep themselves alive, and I'm kind of hoping this is an anomaly and we'll go back to bloodthirsty wenches in the next installment.
Definitely looking forward to the next story, especially if N'Kosi and Biyu are going to be the main characters.
The ultimate Viking warrior meets outlaw biker: Wulf, the Raider King. He rules a future, destroyed world with the force of his will alone. Now he will meet the one woman who will change... everything.
Wulf is king of his clan and the ruthless head of the raider brotherhood.
Every foe in his path surrenders to his will. But when his mortal enemy’s beguiling daughter gets under his skin the way no one else ever has, a whole new intensity from the Raider King is unleashed…the fiery strength of dark passion and hard-hitting lust.
Kathlyn is no fan of the life she’s been forced to live under her savage father’s unforgiving rule. But the bold and powerful barbarian who steals her innocence—and her heart—is a dangerous bet. There’s nothing safe about a man who wants to destroy everything she knows and burn it to the ground. Except if Wulf can set her free, maybe safety is overrated...
Will the overwhelming heat of her warrior-king lead to something more powerful than either of them can imagine?
Readers will tremble before the Raider King in Edge of Power.
