Interview

Hi Kathy! So great to have you on. It was lovely meeting you at the Historical Romance Retreat.

First off, what's your book "Alpha Unleashed" about?

Something wild is happening in Detroit. People are changing into strange beasts and the city is going crazy. Simon Gold just wants to hang out as a grizzly in the woods, but then his best friend’s sister Alyssa shoots him and demands that he come save her brother. Pretty soon he’s in Detroit where people are half shifting and that’s not a good thing. Hard enough to control the amped up shifters he’s dealing with. Harder still to calm the crazy hybrids that are rampaging through the city. But the absolute worst is that Alyssa makes him remember the man he used to be and the dreams he once had. Damn it, she’s offering him everything he ever wanted, but only if he takes control of the most dangerous shifter gang in Detroit.

So I just wrote that copy and it’s very exciting, but now I’m going to talk as the author. I love playing with the different halves of a shifter: man and bear. Who’s in control and what does that mean? Who wants the heroine and what is he willing to do to get it? Every hero in the Grizzlies Gone Wild series is losing the fight to control his animal side. What they need is a strong woman to slap them upside the head and give them some much needed perspective. Of all my heroines, Alyssa is my favorite heroine because she kicks ass. She isn’t a cop or anything military. (That’s a different book in the series) But she is fighting for her brother’s life and for Simon’s soul. So yes, she kicks Simon’s ass in the best possible ways.

What is your writing place like?

A total mess with books, papers, socks, and cat fur everywhere. I'm on a chaise longue so I can stretch out my legs, but my cat Cinnamon usually lies next to me and then pushes her claws into my calves. Ouch! So I giver her more room. Eventually, I slip further and further off the furniture. Some days, I barely have any room at all, but there's enough space for my keyboard and that's all I need. Plus coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.

Is your home a place of order or chaos?

Ordering take out? Yes. Otherwise...total chaos.

When it comes to your first draft, do you write via computer or notepad? or Both?

Computer. Definitely. I can't read my own handwriting.

Do you have any kids? Has your writing inspired them to read / write?

Yes. Two daughters. My writing has inspired one to go into the sciences and tell me the ridiculous nature of my shifter biology theories. The other daughter is a lawyer who advocates for children. She says having a mother who will talk frankly about sexuality traumatized her so much that she wants to protect children from crazy mothers. (That's a joke. She actually does advocate having frank talks about sexuality. She just objected to the cover model pictures all over the house. And then there was that deck of cards featuring...um... nevermind. You probably get the idea.)

What's next for you as an author?

The Locker Room Dairies series releases this summer along with baseball season. So lots of baseball hotties in my future. Plus the Grizzlies Gone Wild series continues in the fall. There's DANGER in DETROIT that has to get solved!

Do you like to cook?

I would prefer to scrub the bathroom floor then cook. I hate it. With a grand passion. The last time I cooked, the recipe called for "flattening the chicken". I grabbed a frying pan and wailed on that piece of chicken while screaming, "I hate this!" Fortunately, my husband came to the rescue and we ordered pizza. Which was great for that meal. But what about tonight? Who's got the Grubhub ap? I do!

Do you have a newsletter? If yes, where can readers sign up?

Yes! www.kathylyons.com has the link at the bottom of the page. It's filled with fun excerpts and special content that is just for you!

Do you have any pets? If yes, do your pets play a part in your writing?

I have a very generously endowed cat named Cinnamon. (My kids call her Cinnamon Bun) She hasn't shown up in my books yet, but I think that's a great idea.

What's your favorite restaurant?

The one I'm at. So long as I don't have to cook. Well, okay, I do love a local organic sushi restaurant called KoFusion. Yummy!

At what point did you know you wanted to publish a book?

I've been a storyteller from my earliest days. I was quite the dramatic child. But the idea of writing a book came in my twenties. I read a terrible, terrible book and wanted to re-do it right. So...I did. And my writing career was born.

What is our favorite drink?

Soy mocha latte. (Soy because I'm lactose intolerant.)

Do you feel music has inspired your writing?

Nope. I'm so word oriented, it's all about the rhythm and music of the words themselves.

What's your day job like?

It's this one. I write full time. Or you could say, I provide a warm body for my cat to sleep again. But I don't get paid for that except in purrs.

Is there a book you would recommend to other authors / aspiring authors to help them with their writing?

Yes. Their own. Same thing with film. You learn the most by creating your first novel/film. But then you have to start studying. I love Wired for Story by Lisa Cron

What place is on the top of your to travel to list?

I want to see the Northern Lights. It's on my bucket list. So...anywhere/place where that can happen.

Do you have any books that are on your must read bucket list?

So many. But as I read a lot, I've crossed off everything on the bucket list. Now I'm reading for pure pleasure.

What genres do you write in and what inspired you to write in these genres?

I started in historical (regency). I loved the idea of a heroine who was constantly being restricted by silly societal rules but managed to marry the hot Earl anyway. (Back then we hadn't progressed to Dukes). I've written a ton of historicals as Jade Lee and you should check them out because they're fun, sexy romps! As Kathy Lyons I'm doing shifter paranormals (go team Grizzly!). I've already talked about why I love shifter stories. And I'm also about to release an exciting baseball romance series. The first one is Hitting It (book 1 of the Locker Room Dairies.) I was a racquetball pro for a while in my 30s, so I know the difficult life of an athlete. And also how hard it was to give up my sport once my knees blew. I still am sad about it. But sports books let me step back into that wonderful life again, at least in my imagination. And to get it on with a hot athlete.

It's been a pleasure having you over.

Thank you for hanging out with me. I've got a lot of exciting books coming out, but honestly, I'd rather just sit and gab with you. Not like this but face to face. Anyone going to be at Lori Foster's Reader and Author Get Together? I'll be there! Come find me!

Anything else you would like to share with the readers?

I love chatting with you. Please join me on Instagram (KathyLyonsAuth), Twitter (KathyLyonsAuth), or FB (KathyLyonsBooks). I try to respond to everything!
