Almost Human

~The First Trilogy~ 3-in-1 Edition

Felicity Snow knew that college was going to be an adventure, but she never counted on the roller coaster ride that she got. Felicity was more than a little apprehensive about moving away from home, not knowing anyone in a new town, and finding a job. Luckily for her, she is able to land a job right away at the local bookstore and coffee shop.

It is after an attack on Felicity and her co-worker, Ben, one night that she comes face to face with the college town's deadly problem, vampires. It is also at that time, that Felicity meets Cain. Cain is a mysterious, gorgeous guy who visits the bookstore often, and is actually the one who rescues Felicity and Ben during the attack. Felicity becomes intrigued with him and strikes up a friendship that steadily progresses to something more. She gets the shock of her life when she discovers that this man, with whom she is quickly falling in love, is also a vampire. In spite of this revelation about Cain, she decides that his being a vampire doesn't matter to her. She trusts him and knows he would never hurt her.

While her good friend Ben does not approve of her romance with a vampire, Felicity will not be deterred from Cain. Unfortunately, there are many obstacles that stand in the way of their happiness. In addition to the army of vamps that a Sindy, a young female fledgling is recklessly creating, there are still more vampires popping up in town, threatening the safety of Felicity and her friends, Ben and Allie. If things aren't bad enough, Cain is worried about the strength of the control he has over his own vampire nature. He feels a strong pull to Felicity's blood and is not always sure he can trust himself to keep his vampire side at bay. Are these two lovers facing a losing battle trying to stay together or can their love truly be enough to see them through?

Almost Human-The First Trilogy, is an exciting, paranormal love story told in three books. It should be stressed that these are not stand-alone stories. It is necessary to read them in order, as the action picks up where it leaves off in the previous book.

The author does a great job of introducing you to the main characters early on and then wastes no time in getting the action started. In fact, memorable climactic scenes occur in each of the three books in the trilogy, leaving the reader hanging on every word and detail.

Character development is done remarkably well, allowing you to get a good glimpse into Felicity and Cain's personalities. Felicity is a very likeable and resilient, young woman. One moment, she seems mature beyond her eighteen years, being a beacon of light for Cain, offering him the caring and understanding that he has never had. At other times, through her words and actions, you cannot help but see the vulnerability of her age.

Cain is a bit of an enigma. He is fully aware of and in tune to the vampire beast inside of himself, but is powerful enough to keep that side in check for the most part, thus holding on to as much of his humanity as he can. He places great value on the fact that his memories and some of his humanity are still intact. This is what draws Felicity to him, his ability to be almost human, many times making her forget what he actually is.

Felicity and Cain's connection to each other can only be described as extremely romantic and intense. While this story might be considered a Young Adult selection because of Felicity's age, it should be stressed that there is some strong sexual content. What begins as a gentle, tentative relationship between the couple develops into a more mature, sexual relationship as time goes on. They share many tender moments, and as those moments become more sexual in nature, the scenes get pretty racy. Overall though, the author does a fine job in creating these scenes between the two lovers and you are happy that they are together and enjoying each other.

The supporting characters, which include Ben, Allie and Sindy, are also developed very well in the three stories. The biggest character metamorphosis of all would probably go to Sindy. She is a pretty sinister character throughout most of the trilogy, but in certain moments of the story, the author allows just a touch of her true personality and vulnerability to show. Certain details come to light towards the end of the trilogy, which give you an understanding as to why Sindy is the type of person she is. You begin to see what Cain sees, that there are still traces of humanity in her that make her worth saving. Ben and Allie, childhood best friends and Felicity's new friends are extremely enjoyable, and play well off of each other. They have the tendency to bicker like siblings and have many humorous lines throughout. You can't help but be very fond them.

This trilogy is definitely a keeper for anyone looking to get swept into a great paranormal romantic series. The author takes you on an emotional rollercoaster that will have you sitting in suspense one moment, laughing out loud the next, and then crying your eyes out at yet other times. It is definitely a book series that should be read slowly and savored. By the time you have reached the end, you will be craving a continuation. Thank goodness the author is hard at work on completing, Almost Human-The Second Trilogy.
