Under the cover of darkness, a vampire academy is hidden from human knowledge. Here the vampires train to fight the enemy and learn of their heritage. For Layla, the time has finally come to expose herself to others of her kind who are unaware of what she really is. It is a sensitive time to not only test her willpower, but the consequences surrounding her unnatural existence. However, lust for vampire blood isn’t the only kind of lust she battles and before long the temptation is much too great to ignore. One look from Shade and the loneliness she’s felt for far too long disappears and another more urgent feeling hits hard. Layla has proven herself a worthy opponent in hand-to-hand and weapons combat as well as knowledgeable of the vampire race, yet her true identity remains shrouded in mystery. Will she be shunned or accepted?
The prologue starts the story with an extremely lusty situation, so the reader will immediately come to attention and remain distracted by the overall mystery in the plotline. Unfortunately, it didn’t read fluidly in storyline or dialogue. Some of the detailing and Layla’s thought process felt awkward or out of place in a few of the scenes. Layla is an extreme character and while we are not really given her physical description until a few chapters in, it is clear that she is a strong heroine and at the same time the most protected.
While reading I became more and more curious of not only this vampire academy and the world surrounding it, but also of who Layla is as well as her enigmatic background. It is not fully realized in the story and we are left with a more or less to-be-continued at the end. I was a bit disappointed to not have learned more by then, but find myself really wanting to read the next to satisfy that curiosity. Paranormal readers will appreciate this new world of vampires versus humans and the saga that is sure to continue in the next story.
Layla, a twenty-one-year-old half-breed known as a dhampir, is incredibly beautiful and deadly. She drinks vampire blood for power and to stop the burning hunger.
The vampire academy is a hundred acres of land surrounded by high tech security to ensure that none enter or leave. She is the protection.
When she has lessons with the vampires, she struggles with her hunger and has to learn to trust them—a big issue for Layla because of her past, something she can neither forget nor run from. The past that haunts her dreams reminds her that she cannot hide as she lives her life in the academy.
Then there is Shade—an impossibly handsome vampire and Layla’s one-on-one instructor. Desires she never knew rise whenever he looks at her. She cannot stop how her body reacts to his touch or how much she wants his body and his blood.
It is a forbidden lust that they share, one they must keep a secret from those around them or Layla risks everyone finding out who she really is.
Someone wants her dead. Layla’s goals, deal with the vampires who hate dhampir’s and keep herself alive. Can she do it?
