If you’ve read the previous two installments, (and if you haven’t, why not!) you are well aware the Hathaway’s are not your conventional family. After living a life of watching pennies and making do, the Hathaway’s have come up in the world. But who they are, and what they mean to one another, hasn’t changed.
Poppy has seen her two sisters wed and gloriously happy. She wants the same, but she wants her life to be one of quiet and solitude; something not usually possible with the Hathaway’s. Having picked out the man of her dreams, and after being assured he feels the same, Poppy is convinced all is going to work out as she plans. But then she meets Harry Rutledge.
Harry is wealthy, powerful and always gets what he wants. And after one meeting, he wants Poppy. He will go to any lengths, fair and foul, to get her. But once he gets her, he realizes the most important thing about Poppy is her heart, and that he doesn’t have. So begins the courtship after the marriage, and all the trials and tribulations that entails.
I really enjoyed the first two books in this series, but this installment was an absolute delight. Laughing out loud was commented on frequently by family, and they wanted to know what was so amusing. I just wanted to get back to my book. Ms. Kleypas has given us a peak into Amelia and Win’s marriages, as well as a slight foreshadow of what is to come for Leo. While this book had it’s lighthearted moments, it also had danger, mystery and a painful look at Harry’s childhood and how it made him into such a cold man. But the Hathaway’s have a way of warming things up, and Harry is no exception. The development of the emotional and physical bond between Harry and Poppy was a joy to read. I can’t wait for the next book in the Hathaway series, and can only hope it is as stellar as “Tempt Me at Twilight.”
