“The Curse” by Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love is Book 3 in ‘The Belador Series’ and is another action-packed paranormal tale about the Belador Evalle Kincaid. It continues following the various factions and continues to almost have a soap opera feel due to the number of threads that are being developed. I do like that Evalle is starting to mature in terms of her relationships although she is still woefully immature in her reactions but there are several unfortunate pairs who are still undergoing extreme angst which is worsening. I think that a thumbnail synopsis of the relationships between all of the groups involved and their respective deities or leaders would be extremely helpful because I have read all of the books in the series and am still a little confused occasionally about who is allied with whom and whether someone is double- or triple-crossing someone else. There are a couple of developments that seem a little too forced for my tastes but I did enjoy finding out a little more about Isak Nyght and I always love glimpses of the little gargoyle, Feenix. The fight scenes are thrilling as usual but the aftermath seems disingenuous sometimes, especially since Evalle seems to require very little time to recuperate from her often life-threatening injuries. I enjoy the storyline itself but the read is a bit chaotic.
Evalle Kincaid has made promises in order to save her freedom and her life but events seem to conspire against her fulfilling her oaths. Her concern for the multiple males in her life complicates things even more as she finally starts working through her past issues with intimacy. Storm, the Skinwalker, frantically tries to recover from his injuries in time to pursue his skittish Belador while she worries about him, the allegations that her mentor Quinn is betraying his allies, the danger that Isak Nyght will discover that she is one of those he hunts, the demands by Dakkar for restitution for the loss of one of his bounty hunters, the presence of the formidable Svart trolls in town, the disposition of Tristan and the other Alterants, as well as finding a way to deal with the Rias who seem to spontaneously appear. This is only a fraction of the challenges being faced by Evalle and her allies but most of the issues are not resolved in this tale which makes it inevitable that the reader is left anxiously awaiting further developments in Evalle’s very exciting life.
Evalle Kincaid will fight to the death for her supernatural friends.
But when Sherrilyn Kenyon and Dianna Love’s tough-as-nails heroine reveals her darkest secret, who among those she had trusted will be left standing?
With the freedom of an entire race hanging in the balance, Evalle has two days to make good on a promise that she suddenly has no hope of fulfilling when demonic Svart Trolls invade Atlanta. She takes a leap of faith, seeking help from the one man who recently put Evalle in his crosshairs—Black Ops specialist Isak Nyght. While trying to stop the bloody troll-led gang wars, Evalle unwittingly exposes a secret that endangers all she holds dear and complicates her already tumultuous love life with the mysterious Skinwalker, Storm. But when Evalle discovers she’s the number one target in the Medb coven’s ruthless plan to destroy all Beladors, the deadly Alterant is forced to make a game-changing decision with no time left on the clock.
