Vicious Grace

The Black Sun's Daughter, Book 3

M.L.N Hanover's world of The Black Sun's Daughter is an intricate story that kept surprising me.

At the end of each book I am left wondering "what's next?" "What new twists and turns will appear in the next book?"

Jayne Heller inherited her uncle Eric's vast estate and all of his paranormal weirdness. Before he died she had no idea that "riders" existed. Riders is the generic term for things that possess people, some examples are vampires, lycans, spirits, voodoo gods, and types of demons. Jayne's uncle Eric worked to dispel these evil entities from our world and sent them back to the other world.

Jayne gathered a group of men that worked with her uncle Eric and hired them to be part of her circle. They have traveled around the world  checking into Eric's properties and learning about his work. In the latest installment, Vicious Grace, they've been summoned to Chicago, to a hospital that is experiencing some very disturbing problems. The person that called them to the hospital is Jayne's lover Aubrey's ex wife, Kim.

Kim and Aubrey both worked for Jayne's uncle Eric before he died. Jayne has worked with Kim before and actually likes her even though Jayne worries about Aubrey still being in love with Kim.

Jayne has no idea that's a minor worry compared to how complicated the trip to Chicago is going to get.

The thing causing the disturbance in the hospital is bigger and badder than anything they've encountered before, it's reach strong even though it is buried and bound magically. Even worse it looks like Jayne's uncle Eric knew about the big bad under the hospital, but why would he have wanted to free it. If  that's even what he was trying to do? His notes are a scrambled mess the team can barely make heads or tales on. The whole situation tugs at the team threatening to rip them apart. Even worse-part of the threat may be hidden in uncle's Eric's secrets- and inside Jayne.

Will they make it out of this one unscathed? Will the team survive or will Jayne have to go on without them?

The world Hanover has built in this series is complete and complex. I love the intricate twists and turns you don't see coming. In this latest installment the reader gets a couple big surprises thrown in their lap. One involving Eric that I totally did not see coming and another involving Jayne which happens right at the end of the book.  I kinda knew something along those lines was going to eventually come up- but the Eric issue- didn't see that one at all.

I can't wait to see how all of the new developments will unfold in upcoming books. This one made a lot of changes in the whole team dynamic and will obviously make the next books very different as far as the cast of characters and the tension and interaction between characters.

I for see things becoming more intense and complicated between Jayne and Ex. I also see Jayne learning some things about her family and dear old uncle Eric that she isn't going to like.
