Veiled Magic is definitely worth picking up. The story is tightly written with wonderful characterization and an intriguing plot. Blake introduces the reader to a fascinating world with interesting rules and manages to do it without a single misstep or slow moment.
Word of warning: this is not a romance; it's actually urban fantasy. There is not an HEA at the end as much as I wanted one.
Donata is the perfect semi-reluctant hero - she wants to do the right thing, but she's justifiably freaked out at being dumped into the deep end. She does manage to gather a good crew around her, however, and I liked that she wasn't a wilting flower in need of rescue but she also wasn't a female Terminator impervious to the softer emotions or harm.
So that's the good news: this is a pretty awesome book and fans of Ilona Andrews should be all over this new addition to the urban fantasy scene.
Bad news: it's urban fantasy, which yes, means no HEA, and also, it's the first book in a series that will only be continued if there's enough fan support. So I guess what that means is that you, yes you, should go out and pick up this book pronto so we can all get the second book and see what happens next.
Well, also, there is the bad bad news of there is a love triangle that didn't sway one way or the other at the end of the book. And I don't precisely think that Blake is the type to go for menage type scenarios even if the guys went for it. So there's that.
Regardless. Pick up Veiled Magic. It's definitely worth taking a look at.
A spellbinding new novel from the author of the Baba Yaga novels.
Since Witches came out of the broom-closet in the early 21st century, they have worked alongside humans as police officers, healers, stock traders, and more. But they aren’t the only paranormal entities in our world...
Police officer and Witch Donata Santori spends her days interrogating dead witnesses by summoning their spectral forms. Normally the job is little more than taking statements and filing reports. But when she’s called in on the case of a murdered art restorer, she finds herself suddenly in possession of a mystical portrait that both the human and paranormal communities would kill to get their hands on.
Unable to take on the forces hunting her alone, Donata seeks help from two unlikely and attractive allies: a reluctant shape-changer and a half-dragon art forger. But as the three of them hurry to uncover the truth about the powerful painting, Donata realizes that she’s caught in the middle of not one but two wars—one for possession of the painting’s secrets and one for possession of her heart...
