The Midgard Series, #1

This is the first installment of Ms. Kirinard's The Midgard Series. This was a good start to this urban fantasy series. There is a lot of Norse mythology, which I don't know as well as the Greek mythology, but it was a wonderful way to learn about the Norse mythology. I can't wait for the next installment, Black Ice, which should be out in July 2014.

Mist is a Valkyrie. Myst along with some of her sisters are sent to earth as a guardians for Odin's artifacts. Mist is to guard Odin's Gungnin which is a spear that never misses its mark.

After several years without contact from any of the Gods, Mist and her sisters assume that Aesir is no more and that the Gods have all been killed during Ragnarok, the last battle. Mist loses contact with her sisters and decides to live as a normal woman.

She ends up in San Francisco where she makes a living making swords and lives with her boyfriend. Then she runs into and fights a creature who should not be on earth. When the battle is over she finds what she thinks is a homeless man. It turns out that he is an elf, Alfar who was sent by the Goddess Freya. Mist must team up with Alfar to locate the other Valkyrie and gather together Odin's treasures. It turns out that Mist's boyfriend was really Loki. He also wants the treasures and has already stolen the Gungnin. Mist doesn't completely trust Alfar. She thinks he has another motive for being there. But for now she has no choice but to trust him.

Book Blurb for Mist

New York Times bestselling author SUSAN KRINARD launches her first urban fantasy series with MIST.

Mist lives a normal life. She has a normal job, a normal boyfriend, and a normal apartment in San Francisco. She never thinks about her past if she can help it.

She survived. That’s the end of it.

But then a snowy winter descends upon San Francisco. In June. And in quick succession, Mist is attacked by a frost giant in a public park and runs into an elf disguised as a homeless person on the streets…and then the man Mist believed was her mortal boyfriend reveals himself to be the trickster god, Loki, alive and well after all these years.

Mist’s normal world is falling apart. But thankfully, Mist isn’t quite so normal herself. She’s a Valkyrie, and she’s going to need all her skill to thwart Loki’s schemes and save modern Earth from the ravages of a battle of the gods.
